Positions
MIRAGE Lab is always looking for exceptional graduate research assistants (both Ph.D. and M.S. level) and undergraduate researchers. Students with experience using Python, computer vision, optical metrology, or photography are especially encouraged to contact Dr. McGregor.
Our group works on a mixture of problems at the intersection of manufacturing and software with a focus on industry applications. Our research uses experiments, simulations, virtual prototyping, and machine learning / industrial artificial intelligence to solve interdisciplinary challenges.
Students from our group can expect to publish in top journals and have outstanding career opportunities upon graduation.

Can I join your research group?
Current UMD Students
We always welcome talented students interested in gaining research experience or exploring new research areas! Please either stop by office hours or send a brief email describing your background and interest in our research.
Prospective Students
Students looking to join the M.S. or Ph.D. program are encouraged to apply first. If you have particular questions or concerns about the program, our research group, etc., I am happy to answer those by email. Please do not send generic emails asking if a position is available. If you are particularly interested in our research, please indicate this in your application. Listing “Davis McGregor” as a faculty interest will flag your application for his review.
What prior experience do I need?
Most advanced skills can be acquired after joining the research group. However, we generally seek out students with prior experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Manufacturing (additive or traditional)
- Computer programming (we use Python, but skills translate across languages)
- Metrology or quality assurance
- Imaging systems (including photography and photo editing)
Graduate Student Stipend?
We offer a competitive stipend for our students. The Graduate School posts general information and numbers online. Offers can vary slightly from person to person, but this is a starting point.
How can we collaborate?
MIRAGE Lab is highly focused on industrially relevant research, and collaboration opportunities are abundant.
